Conference Commemorating the 20th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall
Date: November 9, 2009
Description: In commemoration of the twentieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the European Union Center will co-host a major international conference commemorating the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The day-long event will include a panel discussion of associated Memcon archival material, a media symposium with German and U.S. Journalists to discuss EU/U.S. perceptions of the transatlantic relationship since the fall of the Berlin Wall, a panel discussion on the newly released book "1989 and the Fall of the Berlin Wall," and a keynote presentation by Dr. Condoleezza Rice and the 41st President to discuss the ramifications of an event that played a major role in the transformation of contemporary Europe.

Media Symposium: EU/U.S. Perceptions of Transatlantic Relations Since the Fall of the Berlin Wall
Date: Week of November 9, 2009
Description: The German journalists participating in the November 9 conference will spend the week interacting with other professional media organizations as well as governmental and non-governmental agencies in the State. A local liaison will accompany the delegation on visits outside the College Station area and facilitate their interaction with appropriate groups.

Community Event: Worldfest 2009
Date: November 14, 2009
Description: The 3rd annual international festival presented by Citibank in cooperation with Texas A&M University and the City of College Station will be located at Wolf Pen Creek Amphitheatre. The festival promotes and celebrates the international diversity and heritage of the Brazos Valley.

Teacher Workshop: Teaching in Europe - Europe in Teaching
Date: November 30, 2009
Description: This workshop will provide pre-service and practicing teachers in Texas with information about European educational systems as well as about current teaching practices in various school settings in England, Italy, and Switzerland. Workshop presenters will include faculty from Texas A&M and leading educators from Europe. Taking advantage of existing partnerships between Texas A&M and private and public educational institutions in EU countries, as an extension of the workshop, workshop participants will be provided with opportunities to teach in Europe through TLAC faculty-led study abroad programs.

Essay Competition: Blinn Community College Students
Date: Fall 2009
Description: Students in all Fall 2009 Blinn College Western Civilization History and Geography courses will be invited to participate in an essay competition where submissions should focus on any European Union related topic, such as What is the EU?, How the EU Works, Challenges of EU Membership Enlargement, Strategic Issues Facing the EU and U.S. A panel of judges will be formed that includes Blinn College faculty and European Union Center staff. Winning essays will be recognized by the European Union Center and posted on the EUC web site and top-place winners will receive monetary awards.

Art Competition: Blinn Community College Students
Date: Fall 2009
Description: Students in all Fall 2009 Blinn College art courses will be invited to participate in an art competition where submissions should highlight the European Union. Students may use any single or mix of media (examples: drawing, painting, metal art, ceramics, photography 3-D, digital). A panel of judges will be formed that includes Blinn College faculty, European Union Center staff, and representatives from the Brazos Valley area art community. Winning pieces will be recognized by the European Union Center and displayed at the Center or on the EUC web site; top-place winners will also receive monetary awards.

High School Student Competition: Getting to Know Each Other
Date: Fall 2009
Description: In this academic competition, senior students in the Advance Placement English courses at A&M Consolidated High School will develop informational materials on the European Union for the general public. Twelve project winners will be selected and recognized for their projects.

Student Program: Grade 5-6 International Pen Pal Program
Date: Fall 2009
Description: Supporting an established pen-pal club between 5-6 grade students in a Texas middle school and a school in Castiglion Fiorentino, Italy, the European Union Center will provide students in both schools with materials to create ornaments that are representative of their holiday traditions to exchange with their pen pals. The students will also be filmed explaining to each other what the ornaments represent and talk about the similarities or differences in the European and American traditions.
