Transatlantic Symposium

The College of Liberal Arts hosted a symposium titled “Constitutional Experiences in Federal Polities - Problems of Political Legitimacy in a Transatlantic Perspective,” on October 19-20, 2007.

The event was co-sponsored by Texas A&M University and the ASKO EUROPA-STIFTUNG, a German foundation dedicated to scholarship about the European Union (EU). This year’s symposium is the second in a series of five symposia alternating between Germany and Texas A&M. Experts at the symposia included both United States and European scholars.

The symposium addressed issues pertaining to the debate over the European Union constitution and its political legitimacy, as well as its effect on the relationship with the United States. Dr. John D. Roberton, Professor in the Department of Political Science, led the organization of this event.

Allen Roussel Named Diplomate in European College of Bovine Management

Dr. Allen Roussel, professor of large animal clinical sciences at Texas A&M University’s College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, has been named a de facto diplomate in the European College of Bovine Health Management (ECBHM). Roussel is the only veterinarian from the United States who has neither trained nor practiced in Europe who earned acceptance as a diplomate in the college, which consists of 181 diplomates representing 25 countries.

The college was established late in 2003 as the first production animal College of the European Board of Veterinary Specialization, with the objective of improving the health and welfare of the European cattle population and increasing the competency of those who practice in the field of bovine herd health. The college’s goals are to oversee postgraduate clinical education towards specialization, administer specialist European diploma examinations, encourage research and scholarly activity, and to promote the dissemination of knowledge related to the subject.

Veterinarians considered for de facto diplomate status in the college must meet significant criteria that measure not only their professional experience, but also their contribution to the creation and communication of new knowledge in the field.
